Phases 1 and 2
A In the first two phases Pehr is being asked questions. Before you listen to the interview, read Pehr's responses to the interviewer. Predict what the interviewer's questions were about, for responses 1, 2, 3,4, 5,10,12,15, and 17 below. Write your predictions on a separate sheet. B Listen to Phases* 1 and 2 on the tape to see if your questions were similar to the interviewer's questions. Rewind the tape and listen again to Phases 1 and 2 and assess the responses Pehr gives to the interviewer, according to the categories below. For each of the three categories, fluency, grammar and vocabulary, mark X on the line to indicate your assessment. Then, if you would like to, read the transcript on page 173 to reflect on your assessment. In this phase, the candidate asks the questions. The interviewer will tell you about a certain situation. The interviewer will give you a card which explains the situation and has a few ideas for questions on it. You need to find out information about it by asking as many questions as you can. Take a few moments to look at the card before you ask the questions. Try not to use the exact words on the card for every question. The interviewer responds to your questions. Pehr's card looks like this. Task FURNITURE ENQUIRY You are new at the university and you have found some cheap accommodation, a one bedroom flat. Unfortunately, the flat is unfurnished. Ask the Accommodation Officer for assistance with finding inexpensive furniture. • rent or buy furniture m» new or second hand furniture • where to find items needed • where to sell when studies completed • advice on most useful items Think about some questions you would ask the interviewer. Write them down. A • • • • • Listen to Phase 3 of this interview. As you listen, circle any expressions in the box which describe Pehr's conversation style and his manner. Add suitable adjectives of your own. Compare the questions Pehr asks with the ones you wrote. In what ways are they different? C Below are the questions that Pehr asked. Read them through, and compare them with the prompts on the card. Think again about what kinds of questions he asked and whether or not you think he has asked enough. 1 . Note: Remember, every candidate approaches the same task in a slightly different way. There is no one fixed list of questions for this Phase 3.
