LANGUAGE OF MEDICINE

Nearly all occupations have a specialized jargon. Medicine is no exception with its own unique language that provides a unifying, consistent terminology for physicians and scientists to communicate with each other and outside parties.
There are over 200,000 specific words that define the spectrum of the practice of medicine. Since the 1950s, English has been the principal language of the profession, but the foundation for today’s medical nomenclature began in ancient Greece. This was the time of Hippocrates and the formation of medical theories that would dominate medicine for centuries. Greek became the first universal vocabulary of medicine in the Western world.
Linguistic experts estimate that over 75% of modern medical terms are derived from Greek. This occurred in part because of its unique structural components that foster an easy generation of new words. In addition, doctors of that era were the first to discover and then name various diseases utilizing their native speech.
For example, the term diabetes is from the Greek word meaning a siphon. An early Greek physician observed some patients passing a large amount of urine, like water coming out of a siphon; hence the condition received that label. Today, we understand that excessive urination may occur in patients with diabetes.
Greek continued as the chief language of medicine until around 300 A.D. when Roman scientists began replacing it with Latin. As the Roman Empire grew, Latin supplanted Greek as the preeminent medical language and remained so until the early 1800s.
During the Renaissance, medical nomenclature drafted during the surge in human anatomical discoveries had a Latin origin. Early anatomists frequently struggled to translate their sensory experiences at the dissection table into suitable words, and they often relied on something common in their environment to help them come up with the appropriate term.
