DIFFERENT METHODS OF LEARNING

LANGUAGE OF MEDICINE

The tiny flap of skin on the lower part of the ear was called a tragus that means goat. The structure acquired this name because some people have small tufts of hair there and it looks like the chin of a goat.
Other anatomical terms have interesting linguistic origins.
• The lowest part of the spine, the coccyx, comes from the word meaning a cuckoo. The coccyx was thought to resemble that bird’s beak.
The iris, the colored part of the eye, was named after Iris, the mythological goddess of the rainbow.
• The dangly tissue that hangs at the back of the throat is named the uvula which means little grape in Latin; the anatomical structure has a similar appearance.
• The Achilles tendon is derived after the mythological Greek hero Achilles who was killed by a poison arrow that hit his heel. As a newborn, his mother dunked him into the river Styx to make him invulnerable; but she held him by his heel which did not get wet, and it and became his only vulnerable spot.
With the emergence of modern medical theories in the 19th century, Latin started to fade as the primary language of medicine. While European languages began to contribute to the origin of some medical words, most new names continued to be drawn from the ancient Greco-Latin vocabulary both in form and spirit. In 1838, bacterium was named after the Greek word for a beggar’s staff because it had a rod shaped appearance under the microscope.
When the United States became a medical superpower in the mid-20th century, it influenced medical terminology.
English words are now frequently used as names for newly discovered diseases: acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDS is pure English. Foreign countries incorporate these English medical terms directly into their native dialect.
