PART I

  1. Do you think serving coffee 180 degrees hot ought to be punished?

Stella Liebeck severely burned her lap by McDonald’s coffee when she spilled it. The coffee was at between 180 and 190 degrees. The coffee that burned Stella Liebeck was dangerously hot—hot enough to cause third-degree burns, even though clothes, in three seconds. Liebeck endured third-degree burns over 16 percent of her body, including her inner thighs—the skin was burned away to the layers of muscle and fatty tissue. She had to be hospitalized for eight days, and she required skin grafts and other treatment. Her recovery lasted two years.  McDonald’s didn’t just serve their coffee hot– their operations manual required that is be served between 180 and 190 degrees; 30-40 degrees hotter than other coffee-serving restaurants in the area.  The Shriner’s Burn Institute in Cincinnati issued warnings that coffee served above 130 degrees was “dangerously hot.” McDonald’s knew that their coffee was “not fit for consumption” at the temperature it was served because it caused third-degree burns within 3-7 seconds of contact with the skin.  In the ten years prior to this accident they had 700 complaints of burns from their coffee, including complaints of burns to children and infants from accidental spills.

Because I think that it is worth to being punished.

  1. How would you have reacted if you were the client?

If I were the client I would do just like Stella Lieback did. Why? Because firstly, after burning she had to be hospitalized for eight days, required skin grafts and other treatment. Her recovery lasted two years. Must be covered her medical expenses. Secondly, experts testify about how hot coffee should be and that McDonald’s coffee was 30 to 40 degrees hotter than coffee served by other companies. If we don’t complaint now it might be caused to burn others too.

  1. What would you verdict be if you were the judge?

I think, the trial judge did the right thing. Because it is not correct to apply only one side. The judge reduced to $160,000 because Stella was 20% at fault for her accident. The jury then also awarded $2.7 million in punitive damages against McDonald’s because they knew their coffee was dangerously hot and they served it like that anyway because it “tasted better.” The judge then reduced this award to $480,000. If I were the judge I would verdict just like the

PART III

Nowadays many people have access to computers on a wide basis and a large number of children play computer games.

What are the negative impacts of playing computer games and what can be done to minimize the bad effects?

In the 21st century called “Age of technology” most people utilize computers and nowadays even children have opportunity playing games and watching videos by these devices. This essay discusses the positive and negative influence of playing computer games by youth layer and advices some measures to reduce negative consequences.

It is difficult to find children who are not interested in computers in today’s world. And some parents don’t pay attention to their children’s excessive interest in computer games. Scientists have conducted research with children’s parents and teachers on the effects of computers. Discussions show that there are both benefits and harms of computers. It helps to develop children’s skills, independent thinking, teach ways how can out of difficult situations if it is a good computer play.

But some people think that harms are more than benefits. Because of sitting on the monitor for hours not only spoils their health, but also they miss the opportunity to speak their friends, doing sports and others. Some computer games addict children by design and obsession children’s studies, learn important life skills. Many research works suggest that children who spend many hours playing computer games, especially violent games, develop violent behaviors. They avoid social events and outdoor activities.

Why do children become addicted to computers? The first cause is deprivation of parental attention. Next is errors can be corrected by computer when restart it, but in real life can not be done that.

To minimize of these negative impacts, parents must monitor what their children are doing, especially on computers. There are some precautions to reduce adverse influences of addicting computer games: parents should limit the amount of time their children spend on the computer. Ophthalmologists said that children at age 7-12 should sit on monitor approximately 2-3 hours, but not at night, especially before go to bed. Parents try to install logic games to develop thinking. In addition, parents should make sure that the games, videos their children play and watch are suitable for their age.

In conclusion, computer games addicted excessively by children have loads of detrimental consequences. I would suggest parents to give more attention to their children since the influence of the parents is very important to the growth of children. If parents take adequate precautions, the severity of these negative impacts can be avoided.
