3. Tissue equivalence
Dosimetric measurements for the device have all been
made in water. For low energy x-rays, water may not provide
an ideal analog of breast tissue. As such, the Monte Carlo
model was used to determine variations in the effective dis-
tance in water relative to breast tissue as characterized by
ICRU Report 46.

E. Effect of applicators
The applicators used in conjunction with the Intrabeam
for intra-cavity therapy introduce some perturbation to the
x-ray beam and dose fall-off. Detailed information regarding
the composition and construction of the applicators was pro-
vided by the manufacturer and used in Monte Carlo simula-
tions. These details cannot be published for proprietary rea-
sons. The influence of the applicators on relative dose
distributions was investigated using the Monte Carlo model
only, in comparison with measured distance-dose data pro-
vided by the manufacturer for the actual device modeled,
measured as described above. For post-operative breast treat-
ments, it has been found that it is principally only the 50 kV
beam that is used.
17
As such, only the 50 kV beam was
considered for this part of the study.
