East York Alternative student Welcome to our semester school where we offer academic, applied, open, college, university and mixed courses for students in Grades 10 to 12. While our strength is in the arts and humanities we offer a full range of compulsory and elective courses. We are expanding our offering of Mathematics and Science courses to increase opportunities after secondary school in college, university and apprenticeships. Our timetable supports a 2, 3 and 4 credit co- operative education model in a semester. Personal life management skills are integrated into all our programs. We welcome students from across Toronto who have completed 12 credits.
Our diverse arts and so- cial science focus is an enhanced and challenging program that stretches your mind and broadens your abilities. Visual and dra- matic arts courses empha- size participation in studio and performance arts. Ex- plore issues at home and abroad, historical and cur- rent, personal and group in a broad range of social sci- ence courses. Co-op, Community and Compassion “The friendly atmosphere and warm colours lift your spirits.” East York Alternative student We welcome students looking for great co-operative learning opportunities. Your timetable will be designed to accommodate exciting full-day work experiences. We welcome and support students who need compassionate, emotional support best provided within a small school and responsive timetable. Join our diverse groups of students and experience innovative programs delivered by caring teachers. Our school community is made up of the students from across Toronto who choose join us. We are a school of choice. Students apply with a home-school referral and recommendation. Students candidates must produce a writing sample, complete a questionnaire and attend an interview. Please contact us at 416-396-2925 for more information. Our students believe in supporting the community and environment. We participate in Earth Day events and local clean-up activities. EYA students volunteer in day cares, food banks, peer counselling and local theatre organizations. Many of our excursions are full school events while others support particular courses and field studies. The ROM, Ontario Science Centre, Stratford, Kensington Market have been recent destinations for our students. Our in-house talent shows, bowling trip, film festival support the full social life of the school. We join the East York community on Remembrance Day for services at the Civic Centre honouring Canadians who have served their country. Fundraising events, student council, ping-pong, games clubs and rockclimbing are other ways students participate in the life of our school. Special break- fasts, luncheons and our holiday season dinner are always well attended. Baseball games, fundraising car washes and our Wellness Day add to the life of the school. Potential students may also come to the school pick up an application package. We welcome students from across the city who have earned 12 credits including their Grade 9 program. We offer you credit recovery courses and outstanding Grade 12 programs and in- novative activities to help you complete your high school diploma. Two-thirds of our students attend college or university. Working in a project-based learning environment, our students de- velop portfolios they present twice each term to a panel of two teachers and a small group of students.
East York Alternative graduate Career days and guest speakers provide an amazing range of workshops and in- formation sessions. We encourage our students to meet representatives from in- dustry, public service and post- secondary educational institutions. Job fairs provide students with ideas for part-time, summer and full-time employment. Four innovative career days give you an amazing range of workshops and guest speakers. Each term, we create programs that respond to our students’ needs and interest, including music appreciation and emerging mixed media art forms. East York Al- ternative joins with students from the other alternative schools in presenting their work at the annual alternative school art show.
East York Alternative student Our teachers and support staff are wonderful, working hard to enhance your courses. For example, our creative teachers bring world religions to life with visits and tours to temples around Toronto. We host guest speakers who enrich your class experience. We devote entire days to wellness and health, careers and future planning. Reach out to our teachers whenever you need them. We value and promote peer tutoring and mentoring, encouraging students to help each other. We offer remedial education for student needing additional one- on-one teachersupport needed to succeed. Credit recovery is available in most subjects. One day a week an afternoon is set aside to obtain the necessary assistance. Computers and “The Kitchen - Our brand new kitchen is the focal point of our Breakfast Nutrition program and all students are invited to start their day with a snack or breakfast. Our computer lab offers the newest computers and more computers are being added to our classrooms.
