Causes of jaundice
1. Immaturity of the baby’s liver which is unable to get rid of the
excess bilirubin in the blood.
2. Overproduction of bilirubin in the newborn which leads to the
appearance of the yellow colour on the skin. This yellow colour
first appears on the infant’s face then spreads downwards until it
reaches the chest, then the stomach, then finally the feet.
3. Septicaemia (“blood poisoning”) resulting from the presence of
pathogenic organisms in the bloodstream.
4. Incompatibility between the mother’s blood and the blood of
the foetus (Rh or ABO problems).

Treatment for jaundice
A test will be carried out to determine the level of bilirubin in the
blood. If it is high, the infant will be treated with phototherapy
(exposure to lights) which will turn the bilirubin into a
non-­‐harmful substance that will be expelled in the urine. If the
test shows that the bilirubin is low, then the yellowness will
disappear on its own without any treatment within one or two
weeks.
