Food allergies
How can I know if my child is allergic to a certain type of food?
In infants and small children, allergy to any kind of food may
appear in the
form of a skin rash or hives, or in the form of
eczema or red spots; or in the form of swelling in the lips or
eyelids, when he eats food that causes an allergic reaction.
Anaphylactic shock
Anaphylactic shock (also called anaphylaxis)
is a rapid and severe
allergic reaction; when it occurs in a small child it is very
frightening for the parents. Anaphylaxis begins when the immune
system mistakenly responds to a harmless
substance as if it were
a serious threat, triggering the release of histamine and other
chemicals that cause a number of symptoms, some of which may
be life-‐threatening. The symptoms in a toddler include:
•
Swelling of the skin, lips, throat, tongue, or face
• Wheezing or severe breathing problems
• Rapid pulse or irregular heartbeat
• Hives
•
Dizziness, fainting, loss of consciousness
