The Second Continental Congress created a committee to write a 
document that outlined the colonies‘ complaints against the king and 
explained their decision to separate from Britain. The reasons were based on 
French and British ideas. Thomas Jefferson was the main writer of the 
Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence told the 
world of a new nation and its beliefs about human freedom. It argued that 
political rights are basic human rights and are universal.[4:19] 
In 1779, the legislature elected Jefferson Governor of Virginia, he 
served two 1 year terms Jefferson spent much o his time recruiting new 
troops to help with the war effort. In January 1781, British forces captured 
and burned Richmond. Lord Cornwallis, Commander of British forces sent 
soldiers to capture Jefferson, he escaped only minutes before the soldiers 
arrived.Cornwallis surrendered to General Washington inOctober 1781 at 
Yorktown. Jefferson writes Notes on the State of Virginia. On September 6, 
1782 .Jefferson‘s wife Martha died after a long illness. In June, 1783, Jefferson 
is appointed to the nationalCongress, he served in this 
role until May, 1784. Jefferson created a new currency (money) system 
that we still use today. In May, 1784, Congress asked Jefferson to represent 
the United States in Europe, a year later he was made minister to France. 
The Ordinance of 1784, written by Thomas Jefferson and the first of what 
were later called the Northwest Ordinances, directed that new states would 
be formed from a huge area of land below the Great Lakes, and these new 
states would have equal standing with the original states. The Ordinance of 
1785 called for the division of this land into rectangular plots in order to 
prepare for the government sale of land. Surveyors would divide the land 
into townships of six square miles, and the townships would be subdivided 
into thirty-six plots of 640 acres each, which could be further subdivided. The 
price of an acre of land was set at a minimum of one dollar, and the land 
was to be sold at public auction under the direction of the 
Confederation.[5:201] 
Discussion: 
He served as minister o France for five years, were he saw the opening 
of the French Revolution. Jefferson returned to the U.S. in late 1789. 
Washington as the new President asked Jefferson to be Secretary of 
State.During his time as Secretary of State, Jefferson became a leader of a 
group who supported the French Revolution. Jefferson‘s group would 
become the DemocraticRepublicans and Hamilton‘s the Federalists. In 1794, 
both Jefferson and Hamilton gave up their positions on Washington‘s staff
