Teaching vocabulary

Vocabulary
What is ... ?
Is the collection of words that an individual knows

Teaching vocabulary – the basis for forming four main skills

  • Nowadays in communicative — cognitive approach vocabulary competence is very important for communication in a FL; it is impossible to read, write, speak or listen without knowledge of vocabulary. Practice and theory of FL shows that the importance of teaching/learning vocabulary can hardly be overvalued. As many teachers of FL reading comprehension will attest, when their students are faced with an unfamiliar text in the foreign language, the first challenge seems to be its vocabulary. When the text has many new words, students are in despair and seem to be discouraged. There are many methods teachers use to teach vocabulary or to encourage vocabulary self-learning by their students.

Modeling
    • After telling students what to do, it’s important to show them exactly how to do it. Model how you expect them to complete an assignment, so they understand what they’re supposed to do. This will help your students who are visual learners, too

Mistakes
    • If you’ve ever accidentally spelled a word wrong on the board, you know that students love to identify mistakes. When you’re teaching a new skill, make an example riddled with mistakes. Let students practice the skill by identifying and fixing the mistakes for you

Feedback
    • Students don’t always know if they’re doing a good job without you telling them so. Regularly provide written or verbal feedback for individual or group assignments

Cooperative Learning
    • Students learn effectively when they’re working together. Plan activities that require students to work together and learn from one another. In the process, they’ll also learn critical thinking skills, communication skills, problem solving skills, and more.

Experiential Learning
    • Students learn by doing, so create experiences for them to see the concepts in action. Let them practice the concepts in a safe environment. Then, they should reflect on the experience and discuss what they learned from it. Classroom activities that you could do for experiential learning include fun games, experiments, or simulations

Class Discussion
    • Another way for students to teach each other is through class discussions. As students take turns discussing the subject, you can assess their knowledge and discover which students grasp the concepts and to what extent.

Methods in teaching vocabulary

    • Teachers can use devices for vocabulary teaching such as simple flash-cards or word-cards. The teacher writes the English language word on one side of the card and a sentence containing the word, its definition, its synonyms and pronunciation on the other. Word cards can be an excellent memory aid.
    • This is also a handy way for students to carry their new vocabulary around with them to look at whenever they have the opportunity.

Word cards and word association

Methods in teaching vocabulary

    • Teaching vocabulary can become easier with the use of cards with pictures, diagrams and liberal color coding for grammatical clarity.
    • In this way, words are remembered by their color or position on a page or their association with other words, pictures or phrases.
    • Images can link to words; words can also be linked to other words, for example, a student might link the word ‘car’ with ‘garage’ and with ‘mechanic’.
