I love Guy Fawkes N ig h t. It's a B ritis h c e le b ra tio n held on 5th N o vem b er every year. The 
o rig in s of it are re a lly fa s c in a tin g , a s to ry of in trig u e and deception. In 1605, Guy Fawkes 
plan te d som e g u n p o w d e r u n d e r th e Houses of P a rlia m e n t. He w a n te d to blow up the 
g o v e rn m e n t and th e King, but he w as caught. He w a s to rtu re d and executed fo r treaso n.
People lit b o n fire s to c e le b ra te th e fa c t th a t King Jam es had survived, and th e g o v e rn m e n t 
m ade the day a n a tio n a l day of th a n k s g iv in g . People s t ill lig h t b o n fire s to th is day, and fo r 
th is reason, th e fe s tiv a l is s o m e tim e s called B o n fire N ight. A c lo th 'Guy' is put on top of the 
b o n fire and burned. People also set o ff fire w o rk s in th e ir back ga rde ns o r the y atte n d pu b lic

w o u ld hide behind th e sofa fo r h o u rs on end!
I love th is fe s tiv a l fo r m any reasons. F irstly, it b rin g s som e c o lo u r and e x c ite m e n t to 
an o th e rw is e very d a rk tim e of year. Then, I love the s to ry behind it. It's so m uch m ore 
fa s c in a tin g tha n the s to rie s behind o th e r festiva ls. Last b u t not least, I love the fa c t th a t it's 
a m a jo r c e le b ra tio n th a t is p a rtic u la r to th e B ritis h . I d o n 't th in k th e B ritis h are too good at 
n a tio n a l c e le b ra tio n s , pro ba bly a re s u lt of o u r P u rita n past. B ut th e 5th of N o vem b er is a 
valued exception.
