On the o th e r hand, som e are so d ila p id a te d th a t the y re q u ire e n o rm o u s a m o u n ts of in v e s tm e n t and I'm not sure they w ill survive in to th e fu tu re - som e old m a n o r houses, fo r exam ple. W hat is 'c u ltu re ' fo r you? C u ltu re can be defined as the w ay of life o f a p a rtic u la r so c ie ty o r s e c tio n of society. It involves th e ir c u s to m s and tra d itio n s , and so in som e sen ses c u ltu re is w h a t d is tin g u is h e s us fro m o th e rs , w h a t m ake s us unique. I th in k c u ltu re is also w h a t co n n e cts us to o u r past, to o u r h e rita g e . We m u s tn 't fo rg e t m o d e rn c u ltu re e ith e r, tho ugh . Youth c u ltu re is often very v ib ra n t and p o w e rfu l, w ith its new and inventive fo rm s of m usic, dre ss and art. Do you th in k th a t it is im p o rta n t fo r a society o r c u ltu re to have a sense of c o n tin u ity w ith the past? Yes, de finite ly. Change is necessary, but it is also frig h te n in g . For th is reason, people co n tin u e to rely on th e ir tra d itio n s to give th e m a sense of th e ir ro o ts and to re m in d th e m of w h e re they've com e fro m . C o m m e m o ra tin g the past is also a w ay of b rin g in g people to g e th e r, such as d u rin g Independence Day. H ow w ill y o u r c o u n try 's c u ltu re have changed in fifty yea rs' tim e ? We are be com ing m ore and m o re m u ltic u ltu ra l, so I'm not sure th a t a ll of o u r tra d itio n s w ill survive in th e ir c u rre n t fo rm . For exam ple, can we co n tin u e to regard C h ris tm a s as o u r m a jo r a n n u a l c e le b ra tio n if p e rha ps h a lf of th e c o u n try does not have C h ris tia n ity as its re lig io n ? It w o u ld be a sha m e to lose o u r tra d itio n s . However, if th a t is indeed th e case, s o m e th in g new w ill I'm sure have replaced th e m in fifty yea rs' tim e .
