Language is a global field that has specific domains, one of which is called vocabulary. Vocabulary is not a skill in English, but when we don't learn this language, we can't count. In language, vocabulary plays a key role because vocabulary can be used in any language skill. Vocabulary in foreign language learning is very important, so teaching students is very necessary. When some people learn vocabulary, they automatically improve their skills step by step, because vocabulary is the tool that connects all skills. According to Viera (2017) “vocabulary knowledge is an essential tool for all language skills” that can be used to understand both spoken and written texts. In this case, writing and speaking skills always include words. Vocabulary focuses on words, which is why it plays an important role in all language skills. However, learning vocabulary is not only learning the meaning of words, but we also have to know the function of words when we need to use words in the right circumstances. If we know the meaning and function of words, it can make people happy to express their ideas. On the contrary, if students are still confused, limited vocabulary will cause big problems. From the above explanation, if someone is confused about vocabulary, it will affect speaking and writing ability. Speaking and writing skills always appear in all activities, especially for students. In addition, if students find vocabulary difficult and always think more, then they may not be confident in their vocabulary. Each student has different vocabulary knowledge in his mind because he has limits. Especially for those who have limited vocabulary. As a foreign language, they still have difficulties in two respects; meaning and function. It will be a common problem for students when learning English, especially vocabulary. You'll see the biggest improvement. if you learn more words and expressions. There are many students who are afraid to learn English because they think that English is always just grammar, because every skill needs vocabulary. In this case, with a dictionary, EFL students can comfort themselves to find the meaning and function of words because the dictionary will help the students to find the solution to their problem. In EFL students, they still lack vocabulary, so with a dictionary, they can know the meaning and function of words. Once they knew the meaning and function, they used it in daily activities and all skills.
There are three previous studies with similar themes to this study.
