Abstract

Learning a second language requires conscious and sustained effort on the part of the learner to achieve meaningful proficiency. Often, students become complacent with learning a new language, due to discouraging factors such as unfamiliar vocabulary, mixing words with different text meanings, difficulty applying effective writing mechanisms, and another factor. Dictionaries, as a learning resource, help address these challenges; serves as an additional aid for learners, and even teachers, in choosing pedagogical strategies. This method applies a quantitative design to evaluate the effect of dictionary use among teachers and secondary school students in Uzbekistan, using an appropriate questionnaire. The results show the indispensable role of dictionaries as a source of learning materials in ESL environments and the maximum benefit of dictionaries when students are actively trained in how to use dictionaries.

Introduction

Effective teaching and learning in a second language situation requires innovative strategies to complement the traditional methods of chalk writing and storytelling, using teacher manuals, texts, visual aids and illustrations in the classroom. These innovative capabilities include media assistance, ICT and other support aids guides, and dictionaries. Achieving the ability to communicate in a language like English requires mastering the vocabulary of these major language areas – education, social interaction, rest and recreation, professional registration, tourism calendar and the environment (Spirina, 2014). Teachers in a second language situation are unable to delve into these areas within the framework of classroom activities, so independent research is required - reading, vocabulary development and improving skills language - from the student's side, and this is where dictionaries serve as a trusted learning resource.

McLaughlin (1978) said that "vocabulary development is the primary task of learners... This is why desperate learners carry a dictionary, not a grammar, when traveling abroad. Learners not only need to know the basic words, but also need to know the syntactic relationships and phrases, which can be done through the use of dictionaries.
