In the pre-writing step (P), the writer should think about the topic, researches, and gathers
necessary information on the topic, and brainstorms to organize ideas to present them
coherently.
In the main process of writing, ideas are grouped by reviewing and applying the expected
organizational pattern (O) of a chosen genre. The text should satisfy expected conventions of
the genre—the appropriate rhetorical patterns used in that genre.
The during-writing composition process involves writing/drafting(W/D), evaluating (E),
and revising (R). In this stage, the writer first prepares a draft, drawing ideas from
brainstorming work. Then, the writer evaluates the draft in terms of content, organization
supporting details, coherence, cohesion, use of words, grammar, and mechanics.
In the post-writing process, the final stage of the POWER-S approach to writing is sharing
(S). This stage comprises submitting, posting, sending, presenting, and/or publishing the
written text. In the post-writing process, four drafts are prepared.
The POWER-S approach can be used to teach writing formal letters, traditional academic
essays, newsletters, and certain other genres of writing.
