Progress units four to six, exercises one and two as part of our series on famous film directors. Today I'll be taking a look at the life of Francis Ford Coppola. Widely considered to be one of the most important people from the world of film, coppola was born in Detroit in the US. In April.

As a child, he was very ill and had to stay in bed for long periods of time. Quite early on in his life, though, Coppola developed an interest in film and eventually went on to study theater at Hofstra University in New York. After leaving Hofstra in, Coppola moved to another university in California, where he learned from the best people in the world of film, including the famous director Dorothy Arzner. While he was studying for his master's degree, Copola worked with the great Roger Corman, who has been not only a director, but a producer and actor too. In fact, it was Corman who gave Copela his first chance to direct a fulllength film, Dementia 13, which Coppola also wrote.

Unfortunately, it wasn't very popular, but not long afterwards, Coppola had great success with the 1968 musical Phineas's Rainbow. Coppola first achieved real fame when he won an Oscar for the 1972nd World War film called Patton. Two years later, he released what's considered to be one of his best works and one of the most famous films of all time, The Godfather. Following that, Coppola continued to make extremely successful films, including another war film, Apocalypse Now, the crime drama The Cotton Club and the horror film Bram Stoker's Dracula. Despite such success, after his 1997 drama The Rainmaker, coppola stopped directing for some time to focus on other interests.

This included making wine at his home in California. However, in a change from his usual job as director, in 1999, he was the producer of a film for his daughter Sophia. It was almost another ten years before Copela returned to making his own films. In 2007, he directed Youth Without Youth, a love story about the mysteries of life based on a short book by a Romanian author. Most recently, in 2011, he made a horror thriller called Twixt.

Coppola continues to have a business making and selling wine in California. In addition to his daughter Sophia, Coppola has many other relatives working in the film industry. His sister is the actress Talia Shire and the actor Nicolas Cage is his nephew. Coppola and his wife Eleanor have a son named Roman, who also directs an axe and a granddaughter, Gia Copula, who made her first film in 2013. There's a lot more to say about Coppola, obviously, but I'll have to cut it.
