EXERCISE 1 – Basic parts and functions of the computer 1. a) Why does the computer need to have enough RAM (random access memory)? RAM is used to store information that needs to be used quickly. This means that opening many programs, running various processes or accessing multiple files simultaneously is likely to use a lot of RAM. Particularly complexed programs like games or design software will use most RAM. b) How much random access memory is there in your computer? RAM is physically small and stored in microchips. It's also small in terms of the amount of data it can hold. A typical laptop computer may come with 8 gigabytes of RAM, while a hard disk can hold 10 terabytes. 2. a) What is a hard drive and where is it generally located? A hard disk drive (sometimes abbreviated as a hard drive, HD, or HDD) is a non-volatile data storage device. It is usually installed internally in a computer, attached directly to the disk controller of the computer's motherboard. It contains one or more platters, housed inside of an air-sealed casing. b) How much storage space is there on your computer’s hard drive? Hard disk drive storage capacity Some of the most common storage drive capacities include the following: 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB. This range is among the lowest for HDD storage space and is typically found in older and smaller devices. 120 GB and 256 GB. 3. Inside the computer case, there is a part that all the major components of the computer are attached to. What is this part called? Control Unit This is the core unit which manages the entire functioning of the computer device. It is one of the most essential components of the computer system. 4. Which part executes commands given to the computer? The part of the computer that gives commands and instructions to the computer is known as Central Processing Unit. What is Central Processing Unit? • The CPU is the main processor that executes commands based on a program. • It connects all the hardware of the computer and controls the electricity. • A CPU consists of main memory, an Arithmetic and Logic Unit, and a control unit. • It performs actions based on programs that are designed by a programmer. • A monitor is then used to show the output that was performed by the CPU. EXERCISE 2 – Main connection ports This exercise considers the different ports and plugs of a computer. 1. a) How many USB ports can you find on the computer you are using? Use the Device Manager to determine if your computer has USB 1.1, 2.0, or 3.0 ports: Open the Device Manager. In the "Device Manager" window, click the + (plus sign) next to Universal Serial Bus controllers. You will see a list of the USB ports installed on your computer. b) Are there any ports in the front panel of the computer? Many computers include audio ports on the front of the computer case that allow you to easily connect speakers, microphones, and headsets without fumbling with the back of the computer. 2. a) Does the computer have a port for headphones, one for sound-in, and one for a microphone? Identify the audio jacks on the back of your computer. Unless your computer is very old, the jacks are color-coded green for line-out -- for speakers or headphones -- blue for line-in and pink for a microphone. The microphone and speaker jacks may also have small images next to them. b) Are any peripheral devices connected to the above ports? Peripheral devices can be connected to your computer via USB port, serial port, parallel port, specialized network card, or Ethernet network. Local area networks (LANs) commonly use Ethernet networks for machine connection. c) If no peripheral devices have been connected, connect e.g. headphones to your computer. nodes are those peripheral devices which are connected to a network. they are sometimes connected to a central switch or hub or are connected to each other in a ring manner 3. Does the computer you are looking at have a LAN i.e. Ethernet connection port? A LAN port is also known as an Ethernet port. Both terms refer to exactly the same socket on computers, servers, modems, Wi-Fi routers, switches, and other network devices. The term Ethernet port gets its name from the Ethernet protocol, developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineer. 4. Is it possible to use a WLAN with your computer? A wireless LAN (WLAN) is a wireless computer network that links two or more devices using wireless communication to form a local area network (LAN) within a limited area such as a home, school, computer laboratory, campus, or office building.
