  • What is Communicative Language Teaching Strategy?

Goal of Communicative Approach

  • The Communicative approach emphasizes the ability to communicate the message in terms of its meaning, instead of concentrating exclusively on grammatical perfection or phonetics.

History of Communicative Approach

  • Communicative Language Teaching is a natural follow-on from the reaction during the 70s against previous methods which over-focused on teaching grammatical structures and template sentences, and which gave little or no importance to how language is actually used practically

Features and Principles of Strategy

  • 1) Focus on meaning.
  • 2) Communicative competence is the desired goal.
  • 3) Learner-centered.
  • 4) Fluency is the primary goal.
  • 5) Students are expected to interact with other people, either in oral practice.
  • 6) Dialogues, if used, center around communicative functions.
  • 7) Intrinsic motivation will spring from an interest in what is being communicated by the language.
  • 8) Task-based.

Intended Learning Goals

  • Communication in the classroom is achieved by creating real-life situations. Task-based activities are developed to ensure that communication takes place between the learners.

Characteristics

  • Understanding occurs through active student interaction.
  • Teaching occurs by using authentic English texts.
  • Students not only learn the second language but they also learn strategies for understanding
  • Importance is given to learners’ personal experiences and situations, which are considered as an invaluable contribution to the content of the lessons
  • Using the new language in unrehearsed contexts creates learning opportunities outside the classroom

Teacher’s Role

  • To facilitate or guide the communication process in the classroom
  • To act as an independent participant within the learning- teaching group
