ELECTRICITY IN THE WORLD


There is electricity in almost every home and every factory. Electricity provides power for machines and equipment, transmits energy and information, drives and controls machinery. An electric current can produce magnetic fields; it can move a body, giving it kinetic energy and it can easily produce heat and light.
The first battery was made in 1799, the first transformer, generator and motor in 1831. In comparison with civil and mechanical engineering, electricity is a new arrival.
Knowledge of electricity and its laws is essential in all branches of science and technology. In a sense, every physicist, every industrial chemist and every metallurgist has to be an electrical engineer.
There are three types of application of electricity to human affairs.
The first and most important application of electricity is to the conversion and transmission of energy. The kinetic and potential energy of water, the thermal energy of coal and oil and the nuclear energy of uranium can be converted into electrical energy. This energy can be transmitted cheaply and conveniently to factories and homes. And there the energy can be reconverted into heat or mechanical work.
The second type of activity of electrical engineers concerns the use of electricity in transmitting information. The telephone services are part of this activity and the submarine telephone cables, which now encircle the globe, are a great triumph of electrical engineering. Another electrical way of transmitting information is by radiation of electromagnetic waves through space. This forms the basis of radio, television, radio communication systems and radar.
The third type of electrical engineering concerns the use of electrical means of calculation and of the control of devices and processes. Electronic computers have made possible the manipulation of data and the solution of problems that were beyond the power of any mathematician before. Electrical control of industrial processes has cheapened and improved many manufactured articles and it has also released people from tedious jobs.
