Speaking for IELTS

Unit 11

Another way we place extra emphasis on something in English is by adding d o /
does/did to affirm ative sentences in the present simple and past simple. Doing this
expresses a contrast or a strong feeling. Listen as you read the examples.
I do th ink it is u n fa ir that we visit these countries w ithout a thought fo r what im pact tourism
has on the local population,
(a strong feeling)
do like travelling abroad but I also don't m ind spending my holidays relaxing at home.
(a contrast)

Add do/does/did to the following sentences, changing the verb as appropriate.

Although it’s more expensive, many people go abroad fo r th e ir holidays,
b We nearly decided not to go to South Africa, but in the end we went,

I love being able to lie in when I’m on holiday.

Listen to check your answers. Then repeat the sentences, making sure to give extra
stress to do/does/did.
Exam tip : Be careful: if you overuse
do/does/did
for emphasis, it may appear that you
don't know how to form the tenses correctly.
Language: Cause and effect
