1 INTRODUCTION
There are a lot of people who learn foreign languages (FL) in a situation when they do not have an exposure to real life foreign language (L2) use. This situation is an extra challenge for L2 learners, as in most cases they have access to the recorded input only and rarely to a teacher who is a native speaker. Hence, learners have difficulties with comprehending other people’s accents, including that of native speakers’. Listening poses challenges to researchers due to the difficulty in studying it, as we cannot see the source of the problem with listening with a naked eye. The whole process of listening comprehension goes on in the brain and it is extremely challenging to determine the exact stage of listening and processing that triggered understanding or prevented from understanding the input. Consequently, many researchers state the fact that still there are not enough works devoted to listening, however, it attracts attention of more and more researchers. The difficulty in defining the exact problem with comprehension leads to studying this phenomenon from the point of view of different fields based on various grounds. In this article, we paint the picture of factors affecting listening in language learning in broad-brush strokes. Our aim is to provide a general portrait of where the field is now, where it appears to be going, and where we believe it should go. Some factors are not mentioned in the literature but mentioned by language learners, so they are derived from practical experience of the authors of the article.
We have used Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar databases for the search of keywords: listening, foreign language, L2 learning, and we also limited the year of publishing: mainly after 2000, however, there are several milestones that were published before this date. We do not claim that our research is exhaustive; although it determines major trends in studying listening in scientific literature. The list of articles comprises about 50 published works in this field, we excluded works on neurolinguistics as it is a separate area of investigation, the limit was put mainly at linguistics, sociolinguistics, language teaching and learning, and psycholinguistics. Proceedings of INTED2018 Conference 5th-7th March 2018, Valencia, Spain ISBN: 978-84-697-9480-7 0656
The selected articles were sorted out according to the exact challenge they addressed in listening in L2. The challenges with listening were distributed between the following factors: phonological, language factors, cognitive, sociopsychological, and other.
The foci of articles and books were mainly divided into areas of expertise or factors affecting listening: phonological that mainly deal with pronunciation, accent, intonation; linguistic factors which are about the knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and syntax; the largest section of factors is cognitive, which comprises quite a variety of factors that researchers pay attention to; the next group we called
factors that cannot be put into any of the previous groups from our perspective. Download 236.28 Kb. Do'stlaringiz bilan baham: |
