T u tico rin was erected in to a sep arate D iocese by dism em berm ent from T r ich in o p o ly by a B rie f o f Pius X I o f June 11, 1923, and con fid ed to the D io cesa n C lergy. T he d io c e se is bord ered on the East by the P earl F ish ery C oast a lo n g w hich it exten ds fro m Cape C om orin in the South to very near the P am ban Islan d on the N orth . Ou the W est, the C ardam on H ills separate it fro m the Q uilon D iocese. On the N orth, it is c o n tig u o u s to the T r ic h in o p o ly D iocese. The past o f this d io ce se falls in to three p e r io d s :— 1. The Portuguese Jesuit M ission (1 5 4 2 -1 7 8 0 ).— F irst am on g the Tam il peop le to jo in the Church w ere the P arav as on the P earl F ish ery Coast fr o m Cape C om orin to Pam ban Islan d . In 1534, w hen V a z de A m a ra l, C aptain o f C och in , sent his fleet roun d the Cape, 11 F r a n cis c a n s also landed, and soon baptised som e tw enty th ou san d people. Yefc no priest settled on the Coast u n til, in 1542, St. F ra n cis X a v ie r cam e from G oa an d, fo r tw o y ears, c a rrie d on his ev er m em ora ble A p o s to la te . He baptised eigh t o r ten thousand people, m ostly ch ild ren ; a b ove all, he ca te c h ise d the w hole caste w ith w on derfu l su c ce s s. The Indian Secular clergy (1780-1838).— A s the Fathers died out, they w ere rep la ced by a few p riests sent by the B ish ops o f C och in and C ran gan ore. 3. The French Jesuit Mission (1 8 3 8 -1 9 2 3 ).— F or m ore than e ig h ty years, the F ish ery C oast form e d part o f the D ioce se o f T r ic h in o p o ly and has no h istory o f its ow n. But in 1923, an area and a C ath olic p op u la tio n tw ice g rea ter than those o f the form er M ission o f the F ish ery Coast w ere m ark ed off in to a n ew d iocese.
