The V ica ria te A p o s t o l ic o f A v * and Peg u, which dates its o r igin from the year 1721, was, at the requ est o f Dr. Biga n de t, V i c a r - A p o s t o l ic o f A v a and P eg u, d iv id e d .in to three V ica ria te s , namely, that o f Southern, N orth ern and Eastern Burma, and by a Decree o f the Sa cr e d Con g reg ation o f the P r o p a g a n d a , June 28, 1870, the limits o f these three Missions were c le arly defined. The V i c a r ia t e o f Southern Burma com p r ises all the te rri tory o f Bu rm a, s u b je c t to the English be fo re the ta k in g of U p p er Burma, e x ce pt the p r o v i n c e o f A r a k a n , which, under the arran gem ent o f 1879, was attached to the Dio ce se of Dacca , and a part o f the D istrict o f T o u n g h o o , which has been atta ch ed to the Mission o f East ern Burma.
