Lesson 12
Listening is persuasive, because it: Makes the other person feel respected and understood. Helps the listener understand the feelings and perceptions of the other party. Enables the listener to ask better questions.
How is listening used in public speaking setting?
The audience should all be listening to what the speaker is saying. An ethical listener interprets and analyzes the information being shared. They display respect for the speaker. They get rid of distractions and avoid prejudging and jumping to conclusions.
Why is listening difficult for learners?
First, listeners cannot control the speed of speech. The biggest problem with listening comprehension is that listeners are not able to control how quickly speakers talk. Second, listeners cannot have words repeated and this can cause critical difficulties for them. Students cannot replay a recording section
What is the most difficult kind of listening?
Empathetic listening is the most challenging form of listening and occurs when we try to understand or experience what a speaker is thinking or feeling.
Active listening: An engaged listening process that requires concentrating, understanding, responding to, and then remembering what is being said. Critical thinking: The process by which people qualitatively and quantitatively assess the information they have accumulated.
How are listening and critical thinking connected?
The concepts and principles of critical thinking can be applied to any context or case, including the process of listening. Effective listening lets people collect information in a way that promotes critical thinking and successful communication.
Types of Ineffective Listening
1. Evaluative listening
Evaluative listeners spend all their time evaluating what you are saying, and making judgements about it. You can spot an evaluative listener, because they will always respond with either agreement or disagreement (or possibly both, in the form of ‘yes, but…’).
