Jismning ichki energiyasi deb undagi zarrachalarning harakat va o’zaro ta’sir energiyasini hamda jism ichida issiqlik muvozanatini ta’minlovchi nurlanish energiyasini tushunamiz. Termodinamik usulga asosan jism bir holatdan ikkinchi holatga o’tganida ichki energiyasining o’zgarishi jismni bir holatdan ikkinchi holatga o’tkazish uchun berilishi zarur bo’lgan issiqlik va sarflanishi zarur bo’lgan ish yig’indisi bilan o’lchanadi.
Termodinamikaning birinchi qonuni shunday deydi: sistemaga berilgan issiqlik miqdori sistemaning ichki energiyasini o’zgarishiga va sistemaning tashqi jismlar ustida ish bajarishga sarflaydi.
