REWRITTEN
The table presents data on the expenditure of adults and children in the UK in 1998 across four main categories. Overall, it is evident that adults, regardless of gender, allocated a larger portion of their income to food and the least to videos. Conversely, children spent the most on music and the smallest amount on food, with girls showing a preference for electronic equipment.

In terms of spending preferences, men and women in the UK shared certain similarities. Both genders allocated the smallest percentage of their income to videos, with men at 2% and women at 1%. Additionally, they equally allocated 5% to music. However, there was a significant difference in the allocation for electronic equipment, with men utilizing 10% of their income, which was ten times higher than that of women. On the other hand, women allocated 39% of their income to food, nearly three times the percentage allocated by men at 14%. Overall, adults in general expended 25% on food, 5% on electronic equipment and music, and the smallest percentage, 1%, on videos.

Turning to children specifically, both girls and boys in the UK spent more on entertainment items like music and videos, with girls allocating 38% to music and 18% to videos, while boys allocated 40% to music and 17% to videos. However, boys spent three times more than girls on electronic equipment, with 18% of their income allocated to it compared to girls’ 5%. Similarly, both boys and girls spent almost the same percentage of their income, with girls at 11% and boys at 9%.
