Conclusion

• In the early days of the 20th century discrete components (valves, inductors, capacitors etc made analogue modulation the obvious choice because of requiring fewer components and being cheaper to implement.
• Complex digital modulation systems are far more easily affordable today and digital modulation can significantly improve the channel capacity (Shannon’s law).
• The two main elements to complex digital modulation schemes are
• Shannon’s Law (1954)
• The integrated circuit (commercially available from the 1960s)
• Shannon’s “A mathematical theory of communication” ((1954) was central to the understanding of channel capacity.
• Integrated circuits made the implemention of complex digital modulation schemes practical and much cheaper than with discrete components. Many digital modulation schemes would be impractically large and expensive if using discrete components.
• The following report is quite mathematical, but basically you can achieve significant improvements in signal to noise ratio over that possible with simpler analague modulation schemes.
