What is memory?

Sensory memory.

What is memory?

Memory is important for information processing, particularly when we rely on our previous experiences
It is important in determining the motor programme chosen to send information to the muscles
How Memory Works
Short-term memory
Information that is forgotten within 30 seconds unless "used" or moved to long-term memory
Example: noting the time on a watch,
hearing a telephone ringtone Not very useful for most college memory
needs
Long-term memory
Extremely important in college learning
• Increases amount that is learned in
college • Important skill to develop for taking tests
Memory is the mechanism that allows us to retain and retrieve information over time. Encoding is the term used for the various processes by which information is transformed
into a memory representation. Rehearsal is the term for the role of repetition in the retention of memories.
Short term memory
Short term memory
✓ Function
temporary working/output store
from sensory memory/cognitive process
✓ Representation
transforms original stimulus to coded form (techniques for memory enhancement rely on improved coding)
✓ Capacity
very limited ("seven plus or minus two units") where a unit is an abstraction
Duration
short (less than 20 secs.)
must be continuously refeshed by rehearsal
Examples of short term memory include where you parked your car this morning, what you had for lunch yesterday, and remembering details from a book that you read a few days ago.

Long term memory.

Long-Term Memory is data that can be stored for long periods of
time. ▸ While short-term memory and working memory persists for around 20 seconds, information can remain in long-term
memory indefinitely.
Long-term Memory is often broken down into Episodic, Semantic, Autobiographical, and Implicit Memories.

Long-term Memory

  • Long-term Memory
  • Differs from short-term memory
  • Huge capacity
  • (relatively) slow access time
  • Forgetting occurs more slowly; little decay
  • Long-term memory structure
  • Episodic memory
  • ■Serial form
  • Semantic memory
  • Derived from episode memory

Long Term Memory
• Function = organizes and stores info. More passive form of storage than working memory
Capacity = unlimited. Duration = thought be some to be permanent

Improve your memory.

  • Some Ways to Improve Memory
  • Knowledge of Results: Feedback allowing you to check your progress
  • Recitation: Summarizing aloud while you are learning
  • Rehearsal: Reviewing information mentally (silently) Selection: Selecting most important concepts to memorize
  • Organization: Organizing difficult items into chunks; a type of reordering
  • More Ways to Improve Memory
  • Whole Learning: Studying an entire package of information at once, like a poem
  • Part Learning: Studying subparts of a larger body of information (like text chapters)
  • Progressive Part Learning: Breaking learning task into a series of short sections
  • Serial Position Effect: Making most errors while
  • remembering the middle of the list
  • Overlearning: Studying is continued beyond bare mastery

Examples of long term memory include recollection of an important day in the distant past (early birthday, graduation, wedding, etc), and work skills you learned in your first job out of school. Long term memory is generally well preserved in early and mid-stage Alzheimer's disease.

Sensory memory

Sensory memory is a mental representation of how environmental events look, sound, feel, smell and taste. It includes a long-term component useful for such activities as recognizing a color or a familiar voice. However, most vivid details of sensory memory seem to fade quickly.
