GARRETT MORGAN
Garrett Morgan was born in Paris, Kentucky on March 4, 1877. His parents were former slaves. He spent most of his childhood attending school and working with his brother and sister on the family farm. Still a teenager he moved north to Cincinnati, Ohio in search of employment.
Mid life In 1885, Morgan moved to Cleveland where he worked as a sewing machine repairman for a clothing manufacturer. Later on Morgan opened his own sewing equipment and repair shop in 1905. In 1909 he expanded the enterprise to include a tailoring shop which retained 32 employees. In 1920 Morgan started the Cleveland call newspaper, as years progressed he became a prosperous and widely respected businessman. His prosperity enabled him to purchase a home and an automobile. Morgan’s experiences driving through the streets of Cleveland are what led him to the invention of the nation’s first three position traffic signal.
On November 20, 1923 the patent was granted for the three position traffic signal. He design a signal that would help people drive without worries of an accident. He also created the hair dying ointment and curved tooth pressing comb, and redesigned the gas mask to be much smaller.
Reflection Garrett Morgan inventions is important to me because it makes the way people easy. The traffic signal is one of the best inventions of all time and because of this African American and his three position traffic signal its much easier to drive safe.
