Gata de Gorgos: To the Ermita and the river park 

Meeting Point 

Gata de Gorgos, Partida Sorts alongside the football pitch. 

Walking Route 

To the Ermita, then across the new road bridge and through the river park. 

Terrain 

Walking Surface 

Mostly roads, although the route down from the Ermita is very 

rocky and uneven. 

  

  

Ascent 

Steep incline to Ermita and a rough descent.

Directions 

 to meeting point 

Leave Jávea on CV734 towards Gata de Gorgos.  Turn left at first Gata 

roundabout on CV734.  At next roundabout, take the second exit (not towards the 

railway crossing).  Then, take the second turning on the left and park opposite a 

row of terrace houses alongside the football pitch on the right. 

Gata-Ermita-Bridge 

Sally Merrett 

1.  With the football pitch on your right, walk to the end of the road and turn right at the T-junction 

to walk pass the Instituto & Centro Salud on your left.  

2.  At the end of this road (with the other level crossing straight ahead), turn sharp left (walking 

away from the level crossing) and go straight up Av. de Ermita. 

3.  Continue straight into Lugar de la Partida Gaya.  There is an incline here which ends at a 

junction. Take the right turn (Barri de Tosalet Calvario) towards the Ermita. [The road to the 

left goes to the cementeri].  

4.  Follow the road up and bear right at the top. This takes you into the grounds of the Ermita.  

5.  From the Ermita, follow the tree-lined, stepped path which zig-zags down the slope past the 

stations of the cross. Some of the earlier steps are very rocky and uneven but it flattens out and 

is easier after the first bend.  

6.  At the second bend, as the tree-lined path turns sharp right, take the track off to the left.  This 

track leads past an old children’s playground on your right. The track turns right at a house.  

7.  You will walk alongside the railway line on your right. This eventually brings you to the main 

road, N332.  Turn right here and go under the railway bridge. Care is needed here. 

8.  After the railway bridge take the first pedestrian crossing left over the N332. This will take you 

over the newer road bridge which spans the Riu Gorgos.  At the end of the road bridge, turn 

sharp right and enter the South Park.   

9.  Stay at the bridge end of the South Park and work your way down to the lowest level where 

there is an exit to a track that leads down to the river.  

Here you have a choice.

 

Choice 1: South side of river (South Park) Solid Line Route 

10. Turn away from the exit and walk through the South Park overlooking the river.  At the end of 

the park, work your way back up to the road level above (Carrer de Sant Josép) and turn right. 

11. At the crossroads, turn right into Carrer del Grup Escolar. It takes you over the old road bridge 

and into Plaza de la Iglesia (the Church Square).  Continue at step 14. 

Choice 2: Gata side of river (North Park) Dotted Line Route 

12. Take the park exit and follow the track down and across the river (assuming it is dry).  Once 

across the river you will enter the North Park that also runs alongside the river.  Turn left (away 

from the new bridge) and follow the gravel track staying as close as possible to the river.   

13. Eventually the path rises up an incline and emerges into Calle de Peñon.  Turn left here and 

follow this road to the T-junction.  Turn right and walk to Plaza de la Iglesia and turn right.   

 

14. 

Both Choices.

  Go straight across the Plaza and follow the road (which becomes Calle del 

Doctor Gomez Ferrer) straight until you reach the N332 again.  Care is needed walking the 

streets of Gata! 

15. Turn right at the N332 and cross at the first pedestrian crossing. Turn right and then left down 

Calle de San Miguel towards the railway. Half way down, turn right to go to Hotel Avenida. 

16. At the hotel, turn right and take the road under the railway. Then take the first road on the right 

to return to your car.
