Girls Compete, Women Empower
I was recently at a restaurant here in New York City meeting a friend for dinner. I arrived early, so I sat at the bar to have a drink while I waited for her. There were no empty seats or hooks to hang my purse, so I placed it on the bar and ordered a glass of champagne. Within seconds, I noticed two women at the end of the bar whispering, pointing at me, and giving me glaring looks. Their behavior was rude, it was obvious, and it was completely unnecessary. All I did was sit down! But clearly something about my presence ruffled their feathers. While on my way home from dinner, I posted a Facebook status update about the situation on my Champagne Diet fan page. It was a quick rant that I felt needed to be said. I never expected the response that followed. Here’s what I wrote: I find it amazing that a simple act of sitting down at a bar can elicit such nasty, catty behavior from some women! I just sat down, placed my purse on the bar (all the chairs/hooks around me were taken) while waiting for a friend and ordered a glass of champagne. Immediately two women started staring at me, whispering, and giving me glaring looks. It was downright rude. All I did was sit down! Ladies: let’s start being NICE to each other!! Let’s stop judging, making assumptions, and being bitches. Do you know how GOOD it feels to smile at another woman? Or better yet, COMPLIMENT her? Insecurity competes. Confidence empowers. Empower yourself and rise above the bullsh*t. #RantOver The post received over 200 likes, nearly twenty shares, and endless comments thanking me for sharing the story. It was one of my most popular, engaging posts in all six years that I’ve run that page. After that response, it became even clearer to me that women do not want to be catty or nasty with one another. Women are craving support, empowerment – sometimes even just a smile. Let’s move past this immature behavior and focus on uplifting each other. Let’s vow to not give into the gossip and the hate, and instead either remove ourselves from those conversations completely, or better – add a kind word and try to reverse the situation. We are stronger, smarter, and just too damn fabulous to sabotage ourselves and each other. |
