In 1827, he was ap pointed Bishop of Isauro polis and V i c a r A p o s to lic o f Cochin-China. In c o n s e qu e n ce o f the pe rsecutio n he was not co n s e cr ate d till 1830 at Ba ng k ok , escaped to P e n an g in 1834, went to Calcutta in 1836 and was entrusted with tbe a d m in is tra tio n o f the V ica ria te of Calcutta in 1838. l i e died at Calcutta in 1840. 3. Joseph Carew, A r c h b is h o p o f Edessa and second V i c a r A p o s t o l ic o f W estern Bengal— In 1838 be was appointed Bishop o f Ph ila delphia and C o - A d iu to r to the V i c a r A p o s to l ic o f Madras, was co n s e cr a t e d in M ap nooth in 1838, reached Madras in 1839 and was translated to Bengal in 1840, p rom oted to the A r c h b is h o p r ic o f Edessa in 1843, died at Calcutta in 1855. 4.
