Exercise 3. Change the construction of the sentence using the Gerund. 
Model: She laughed but she did not reply. 
She laughed without replying.
1. She bowed her head but she did not speak. 2. I like when I do everything myself. 3. 
She insisted that she should be called Emily. 4. When he returned she went immediately 
into the dining-room. 5. I am still a little afraid to be late. 6. The younger man hesitated 
before he answered. 7. He went on and did not pay any attention to her interruption. 8. I 
like to get hold of nice things. 9. She stepped back and did not say a word. 10 After he 
left his friends at the Institute he bought copies of the early editions of the post. 11. 
Little Jane liked when she was clean. 12. Tom realized that he had seen Jane before but 
he hadn‘t recognized her.
 
Exercise 4. Insert the correct preposition before the gerund where required.
