INTRODUCTION
The main aim of this paper is to enhance and to broaden the knowledge on the use of translation strategies, this time, focusing on literary translation and, more specifically, on the translation of foreign words into a given target language. For such a purpose, we would like to present a research on the translation of foreign words in Ernest Hemingway's novel The Old Man and the Sea. In order to provide meaningful data, the research will analyse five different translations of The Old Man and the Sea, two of them being in Spanish, and the other ones in French, German and Italian. In that way, the following specific objectives are expected to be achieved: 1. To identify the translation strategies that have been used for translating the foreign Spanish words in The Old Man and the Sea into different languages (Spanish, French, German and Italian). 2. To analyse in which way the translation solutions are accommodated in the target culture, after the use of each translation strategy, in The Old Man and the Sea. These two specific objectives fit into the main aim of our research, which is to analyse the translation strategies that have been used for translating the Spanish words in The Old Man and the Sea. Lexical choices are a major concern when translating every kind of textual works, including the literary ones. By deciding which words to incorporate to the target text and which ones not, the overall result gets affected in one way or another, since words may determine the extent to which a translated work might be accepted in the target culture. In that way, the translation of foreign words in the original text into another language will condition the reception itself of the translated text. Such is the challenge that the translation of The Old Man and the Sea poses. A literary work written in English by Ernest Hemingway in 1951 that contains many examples of Spanish words that are integrated in the core of the text. A research analysis on the translation of the foreign words that appear in the work The Old Man and the Sea into other languages (Spanish, French, German and Italian) is prone to facilitate the task of discovering a –possible– underlying tendency when translating such kind of words into other languages.
Besides, the interest in The Old Man and the Sea comes out of the fact that the translation of foreign words –as a homogeneous tendency– can be better identified in a homogeneous work, such as the literary translation. This way, the work of a translator is likely to show its consistency and to unveil the personal and unique style of a translation that, if compared with others, might evidence the existence of a common trend when translating foreign words that goes beyond the linguistic and cultural boundaries. Determining such tendency could not only be an aid when translating The Old Man and the Sea, or even the works of Ernest Hemingway; but also when translating literature and other texts belonging to other cores of expertise. Everything under the premise that each text is unique, and so we would like to highlight the descriptive –rather than prescriptive– aim of this research, which is expected to be a useful documentary means. With regard to the current paper’s structure, the second section is thought to serve as an introduction to the current paradigm of translation studies, which conceives the practice of translating as a mediation exercise between different languages that are inserted into specific cultural systems. In particular, we will also address the topic of translation and literature and the translation of foreign words in the discourse into other languages and, thus, cultures. The third section is devoted to the literary work that is to be tackled in the following sections: The Old Man and the Sea (1951) and its connections with its author’s life and personal style, Ernest Hemingway. Later on, a review of the professional profile of the translators of the work into Spanish, French, German and Italian will be offered. In the fourth section the research objectives, materials, design and stages will be covered, as an explanation of the processes that we have followed before starting with the research itself. In section number five, the results of the research will be presented, that is to say, the translation strategies that were used in each one of the versions of the work and its implications within the reception of the target text. In section number six, the results will be commented. The discussion will be divided into quantitative and qualitative data, and the aim is to provide a wide overview of the study’s outcomes. Lastly, the seventh section is a conclusion where an overall overview of the research’s achievements, limitations and possible future continuation will be offered.
Methodological base of the research: our research work is based on the works of native and foreign researchers on fiction translation of the Russian and English languages (Vinogradov V.V., Vinokur G.O., Galperin I.R., Kazakova and practical sources on translation (Vinogradov V.V., Arnold I.V., Barkhudarov.
