CONCLUSIONS
Translating is a practice that requires a deep knowledge of the linguistic and cultural features of both the source and target contexts where the translated work will be received. In that sense, the translation strategies that can be used to carry out that activity, apart from being the means for its realisation, will determine the appropriate, or not, reception of the target text. This will depend on the specific linguistic and cultural features of the target culture. That is why the research that has been undertaken in the present paper has attempted to analyse the impact that the chosen translation strategies can have in the target texts. From our point of view, the objectives that were proposed at the beginning of the current paper have been achieved. In that sense, it is possible to conclude that there is a tendency to maintain the original impact of the foreign Spanish words in the target text. However, the exercise of translating them leads to the intervention of the translator who, sometimes, decides to emphasize the impact of the original language (its foreign nuances), by means of some textual resources. The most common, or noticeable, ones are the accents, turning the discourse into a more genuine one; and the cursive, whereby the nature of the –foreign– Spanish language gets remarked in the text. Once the data have been observed, it is possible to assert that the English version is the one that tends to naturalize the most the use of the foreign words, as they are not even highlighted by any means, such as the use of the cursive; besides, it does not respect the use of the Spanish accents. In the Spanish versions, however, the accents are included, but the cursive is still not used (naturalization). The German translation can be said to be the most Spanishlikely one, as long as it promotes both the use of the Spanish words and their recognition by the target reader; again, by means of other textual resources (accents and cursive). With regard to the French and Italian versions, they also preserve the Spanish original words, even if their use of other textual resources follows fewer regular patterns. The whole set of mentioned strategies is determined by the translational style of every translator. In reference to Jiménez (2018), some translations may tend to the domestication, or to the foreignization. The research that has been carried out in the current paper shows a clear tendency to this former one, which respects the author’s original decisions and style. Even if this research has been limited to the Spanish, French, German and Italian proposed translations of The Old Man and the Sea, it could be a useful starting point for further studies covering a larger set of literary works, authors and texts as well as different topics and cores of expertise, in order to broaden the current conclusions to a wider range. Thus, we would like to promote further research in the near future with the aim of expanding the evidences shown by the obtained results.
