how to uSe

the atlaS web Site

A

s you can see by flipping through the 

pages, this atlas is chock full. There are 

photographs, statistics, quick facts,  

and —most of all—lots of charts and 

detailed maps. Plus there is a companion 

Web site that adds even more. You can 

watch videos of animals in their natural 

surrounds or of a volcano erupting, listen 

to the sounds of people, places, and  

animals, find lots of state information, 

download pictures and maps for school 

reports, and play games that allow you to 

explore the United States. You can even 

send e-postcards to your friends. The 

Web site provides added value to specific  

subjects in the atlas and also helps you 

explore on your own, taking you deep  

into the resources of National Geographic  

and beyond. Throughout the atlas you will 

find these icons.

The icons are placed near pictures, on 

maps, or next to text. Each icon tells you 

that you can find more on that subject on 

the Web site. To follow any icon link, go to  

www.nationalgeographic.com/kids-usa-atlas.

topic, click on the entry in the topic list. This list is your 

portal to vast quantities of National Geographic infor-

mation, photos, videos, games, and more, all arranged 

by subject. Say you’re interested in Animals. One click 

takes you to the Animals choice page (below).

audios, photos, or games, click on one of the icons. 

A list will drop down. Choose from the list, and you’re 

there! Clicking on Blackbeard takes you to a trailer  

for a National Geographic Channel film.

This choice takes you 

to the animal site for 

adults and older kids. 

Use the list of animals 

in the upper right-hand 

corner of the page. 

Clicking on an animal 

name takes you to the 

profile of that animal.

CritterCam. Scientists 

put video cameras on animals 

to learn about the animal from its 

point of view. Click to see those 

videos, learn about the project, play 

games such as exploring the virtual 

world of a seal, and more.

go to the National Geographic Kids’ 

animal site. Click on an animal, and 

you will find a full feature about it, 

including photos, video, a range map, 

and other fun info.
