Danish Agency for Science and Higher Education 8 Figure 2: Increased supply of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) worldwide Source: Edsurge 5 Looking more into the numbers 6 , the total number of learners signed up for MOOCs is 81 million in 2018 with the largest number coming from Coursera ’s 30 million users. Furthermore, MOOCs are now enabling students to earn credits from online courses, even from established universities, and more than 500 MOOC-based credentials are now available. Lastly, an increasing number of MOOC-degrees are becoming available and a large number of students are enrolled in online programs, with the largest number in The Online Master of Computer Science at Georgia Tech and Udacity , where approximately 6,000 students are enrolled. MOOCs are being criticized for not ensuring active learning and are not necessarily an alternative to existing universities but considering the numbers and the fact that top universities such as MIT and Harvard are supplying courses on MOOC platforms it may still be considered a signal of change in the shape of education. Looking at the driver of change, it can be considered as two-fold. On one side students are more tech-savvy than ever, and the Millennials are familiar with and presumably attentive about technology. At the same time, industry demands an upskilling of workers in a more lean and cost-efficient manner. Combined, these two drivers will be described as a ‘pull-effect’. On the other side, a push-effect from start-ups and companies exists, as they view the trend as a business opportunity and/or an opportunity to bring a vision of a different educational experience to life. The following section will look into these two effects to outline cases and signals of them driving change. 2.1.1 Pull-effect: Tech-savvy students and industry demand As the Millennials are more tech-savvy and - interested than ever before, it can be considered an argument to strengthen the use of learning through and about digital devices and software platforms 7 . Educational providers in the US are realizing this need as these generations enter higher education. The new generation of students simply have new ways of engagement and learning.
