INTRODUCTION
Modernism ( Italian) modernismo - "modern trend"; from lat. modernus - "modern, recent") is a direction in art characterized by the denial of predecessors, the destruction of established ideas, traditional ideas, forms, genres and the search for new ways of perceiving and reflecting reality. Modernism is also understood as changes in literature , architecture and art at the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century, aimed at breaking with previous artistic traditions, striving for something new, conventionality of style, searching for and updating artistic forms.
Modernism is a conventional designation of trends in the development of art, trends and schools, the activities of individual masters striving to update the artistic language. In the view of modernists, the avant-garde is a past stage and even a kind of new classic, which, like the old classics, should be developed, and not refuted. Avant-gardism is short-lived, it manifests itself only at turning points in history; modernism is permanent, it reflects the constant desire to improve the artistic form [3] .
Some researchers illustrate the concept of modernism in art with the help of such a direction as the avant-garde. The Russian philosopher V.P. Rudnev explained the differences between the concepts of “modernism” and “avant-garde” as follows: “The avant-garde is impossible without scandal, shocking... modernists are characterized by serious, in-depth work on the form, not tolerating fuss, external effects and populist or scandalous actions that attract the attention of the public. Modernists work modestly, in solitude, in the silence of their workshops, and their experiments are designed for slow, gradual assimilation by a select, narrow circle of connoisseurs ... A typical modernist and a typical avant-gardist were completely different characterological radicals. Here are the typical modernists: lean, long Joyce , pampered Proust ; small, thin, as if forever frightened, Franz Kafka ; long, thin Shostakovich and Prokofiev ; dry little Igor Stravinsky . All these are autistic schizoids, closed in their own aesthetic world. It is impossible to imagine them on the square or on the stage shocking the public... And here are the avant-garde artists. Aggressive, with a thunderous voice, athlete Mayakovsky , also athletically built, "ate the dog" in various scandals Luis Buñuel ; narcissistic to the point of paranoia and at the same time calculating his every step, Salvador Dali " [4] .
Lebedev V. Yu. and Prilutsky A. M. give the following description of the main differences between modernism and the avant-garde, although intersecting with the above, but somewhat different from them [5] . In addition to the obvious chronological non-simultaneity (avant-garde is an attribute of the 20th century, it appears no earlier than the end of the 19th century, that is, later than modernism), they have the following main fundamental differences.

  1. Axiological - modernism does not break with traditional cultural values, for example, T. Mann 's solo artists develop types of romantic singles. The avant-garde not only realizes a value gap, but also openly declares it.

  2. Linguistic ( semantic ) - modernism does not abandon the traditional language of art, but uses all its possibilities "to the limit". The avant-garde begins to radically rebuild the language, usually moving along the path of primitivization, sometimes to the point of "childhood", while the language of modernism is complex and elitist (at the same time, the outward simplicity of the avant-garde is often designed for its own elite).
