2. Identifying information
Task Type & Format
The candidate will be given a number of statements and asked: ‘Do the following
statements agree with the information in the text?’. Candidates are required to
write ‘true’, ‘false’ or ‘not given’ in the boxes on their answer sheets. It is
important to understand the difference between 'false' and 'not given'. 'False'
means that the passage states the opposite of the statement in question; 'not
given' means that the statement is neither confirmed nor contradicted by the
information in the passage. (Students need to understand that any knowledge
they bring with them from outside the passage should not play a part when
deciding on their answers.)
Task Focus
This task type assesses the candidate’s ability to recognise particular points of
information conveyed in the text. It can thus be used with more factual texts.
Tip:
Remember that the statements will not be expressed in exactly the same
way as in the text, so look for key words in the statements and find similar
words or phrases in the text.

Example:
Here is part of a text about the history of Greenland and some of the questions.
The ancestors of the Inuit people of Greenland are thought to have lived in
Siberia – the vast eastern region of modern Russia – until 7,000 or 8,000 years
ago. There is evidence that they then travelled by boat into Alaska, settling in
the northerly part of North America. From there, some migrated to Greenland
around 5,000 years ago, and evidence has been found of their existence around
the northern tip of the island.
