In some countries the quality of life in larger cities is declining.

Why do you think this is happening?
What measures can be taken to stop it?

It is true that life quality in some parts of the world, particularly in large cities, is worsening. A number of factors have given rise to this situation, and it is critically important that these factors are countered with a series of practical measures.

The causes of declining life quality in large cities vary. It is, however, fair to say that the main one is urban overpopulation. More and more people migrate to megacities such as New York and Hong Kong from their rural dwelling in pursuit of better job prospects and living conditions. This, as a result, leads to poor management of resources in cities and inevitable harm to the environment, which are two major contributing factors to poor life quality in urban areas. More on environmental damage, large cities these days are plagued with growing environmental problems such as many forms of pollution (air, water, noise and light) and waste from households as well as the industrial sector. In no way can city dwellers enjoy a happy, healthy life as long as the urban environment is contaminated.

A range of solutions can be offered to address these problems. Encouraging people to move to the countryside would arguably be the most effective measure by far. This can be done by facilitating a desirable life in rural areas through the creation of more affordable facilities like healthcare centers, schools, shopping malls as well as offering well-paid jobs. This way, problems arising from overcrowding, which clearly compromise urban life quality, can effectively be ameliorated. Environmental issues, on the other hand, require a compound solution. More specifically, the introduction of clean transportation such as electric vehicles in cities, combined with more efficient water and waste treatment systems go a long way to minimizing the harmful effects of ecological problems.

In conclusion, while the major causes of falling trends in life quality in metropolis cities are overcrowding and environmental damage, solutions range from incentivizing people to live in the countryside to transportation and waste management reforms.
