A complete thought (a simple sentence)

Compound sentences


I did my best to pass my finals, but I failed it anyway.
The exam has been postponed to another day so we are not taking it today.

Sentence types:



  • Simple sentence

  • Compound sentence (with coordinating conjunctions)

Compound sentence – it is a sentence that is made up of two independent clauses and joined together with a coordinating conjunction.

Complex sentence – it is a sentence that is made up of one dependent and one independent clause and joined with a subordinating conjunction.
Punctuation rule: If a complex starts with a dependent clause, it is followed with a comma to separate it from the independent clause. If it is the other way around, comma is optional.
Both, teachers and students, planned to pay a visit to Amirsoy resort but after few days they decided cancel it.
