PROJECT MANAGEMENT COURSE FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS 
Abstract 
The paper focuses on the issues of project management course development. The course is 
designed for foreign students, thus the peculiarities of the course development are highlighted.

This paper deals with different aspects of project management course development for foreign 
students.
The challenges one meets are the following:
 
different level of English of foreign students; 
 
low level of subject - matter knowledge; 
 
no experience of Russian professors to teach ESP. 
Thus, an interdisciplinary approach to develop project management course for foreign students is 
introduced. 
First, definition of the terms is presented. Project is considered as a special form of activity 
organization that has special characteristics; it is unique, has an innovative idea and effective 
realization; time bound; presented in structured way and involves special recourses (such as 
material, labor, finance, time). All projects have common characteristics they are performed by 
people, limited by resources and carefully planned and managed. 
Project Objectives
are desired results of the activity achieved during the project successful 
realization in defined terms. The general purpose of the project is Project Mission. Project purposes 
may be changed during its realization under environmental changes or current results. So, 
purposing is a dynamic process when the current situation, trends and objectives correction are 
analyzed. Purposes must have the following characteristics: be exact and measurable, time bound 
and achievable. 
The first stage of the project is initiation of business idea and purposes definition, then 
appointment of the project supervisor and organizing project team. Next comes business contacts 
establishment, market study, motivation and customer demands study. Collection of primary data 
and analysis of current situation is important. Determination of basic demands, limits conditions 
and recourses (such as materials, finance, labor) is necessary. Comparison of different ideas are 
followed by presenting ideas, their expertise and confirmation. 
Special attention is paid to the key characteristics of the life cycle of project. So, costs and 
recourses of the project are low at the beginning, then they rise significantly and finally, 
dramatically go down. Fail of the project is possible at the beginning, by the end of the life cycle 
risks go down. Participants can change the project at the start but it is difficult to change anything at 
the final stage. 
Now, let’s consider some factors that influence the project.
The first factor is a political one. It means political stability on the federal, regional and local 
level, government support of this type of projects, contacts with foreign countries in this area and
