GIORGIO When is Anna coming back?
Unfortunately tomorrow already. I wish she did not come back at all. You know what happen ?
ANDRE (CONT’D)
I got into a trouble in gourmet section. Piece of dry meat got stuck in my throat. Nearly survived.
GIORGIO
Tell me, more... Interesting.
Andre has one eye on a football match on TV. People in the bar are noisily expressing disappointment about what's happening in the football pitch.
What a jerk!

ANDRE
So how could my story be interesting to you? I knew Michael well.
SPECIAL AGENT
Do you often visit the gourmet section?
ANDRE You're well informed.

SPECIAL AGENT
I won't be disturbing your work.
CRISANTO Monsieur doesn't disturb me.
Only one question: where were you in the evening of July the 6th? Your boss said his Bentley was left in the garage.
CRISANTO
I don't know. I don't remember. Probably it was so.
It would be nice if you could remember.

CRISANTO
Yes. I do remember. My boss gave me the car keys and warned me that the car has to be well cleaned for the next day because he goes on a journey tomorrow. So I went and cleaned the car inside and outside. Then I checked the oil. Around midnight I went to sleep.
Crisanto is kissing a woman inside the Bentley. Afterwards he turns on the engine. He lifts the garage gate with a remote switch and slowly drives towards the exit. He stops at the security post. He sticks an envelope through the window. The security man takes it with a smile and puts it in to the inside jacket pocket.

Was Mimi productive this week?
VINCENZO
You are trying to save, she puts less effort. I know how much you earn selling these pieces.

sipping the drinks. People are walking around; many of them are seated at the tables and playing.
You're a popular man in our city. I heard bets are placed weather you will sort out the case or not. It was three to one the day before yesterday and two to one yesterday. It means that the trust in you is growing. Before you came they were betting five to one on me.
JAFFE Good evening.
Good evening, it's been a long time.
JAFFE
Maybe because you've been busy lately. Yesterday I had a nice talk with the Special Agent. I remembered with pleasure what a great night I had on July the 6th. There was nothing to lie about. My alibi is like in a good movie. You know, I was reflecting this entire thing.
He is addressing the Special Agent rather bold-faced. 37.
JAFFE (CONT’D)
facts, but have you questioned the Police commissioner? What was he doing on that damn evening? Where has he been? What is his alibi?
Special Agent is pricking his ear and starts smiling soon.
JAFFE (CONT’D)
Anyway, Mr. Police Commisioner, so where have you been in the evening on July the 6th between 8 and 11 p.m.? I'm asking as an ordinary citizen because it's a case of international importance. Of course, since you're an officer you have no obligation to tell me, but it would be wise for the Special Agent to question you. Recently I saw a movie and only in the end it turned out that the crime was committed by the policeman who was investigating it. Good movie by the way. I'm just talking generally. But you never know.
Jaffe is smiling widely. Police commissioner’s confusion passes. Jaffe bids farewell and departs into the thickness of the hall.
This guy is a joker. I like people who live their lives with a sense of humour.
I would put it simpler: he's just an elite crook who dares to joke because he wasn't caught. It's just a matter of time and he may write his cheerful stories in prison trying to get our literary award. As I see you like the world of criminals.
SPECIAL AGENT
So do you, it's only a matter of style. Police Commisioner, this case starts wearing me out. I was in such a situation long time ago.
Special Agent turns around to face the Casino hall. 38.
SPECIAL AGENT (CONT’D) This Casino is already a crime. Charging money for people's weaknesses is also a criminal act. This city is alive from this business. Therefore, I admit, I sympathize with this joker, who, actually, should get behind the bars.
Police Commissioner also views the gambling hall.
POLICE COMMISSIONER
You see, my friend, I made a choice not to plumb the depths of human nature and the dark side of it. I prefer to record the consequences, that is - to punish. This place is well organized; crimes are rare here. That's why Michael's story is really exclusive. That's why you are here.
SPECIAL AGENT
I've already heard a lot about what one or another person was doing in the evening of July the 6th. Now that I remember the question of that joker, I would like to ask, how your ordinary evening goes by. Doesn't matter weather it was the evening of July the 4th or February the 18th. How do you live?
long time. Then he smiles widely.
POLICE COMMISSIONER
My life is simple. I have a lovely wife.

You wanted to talk to me. I heard.
No, I don't want to talk about the case tonight. It was a hard day. Where are you from?
Marseille.
Do you like it here?
Yes, it's peaceful.
Is it what you dreamt about?
No.
SPECIAL AGENT Lots of work?
Not much. No. Low season.
It's quiet here.
So you wanted to know...

SPECIAL AGENT

JEANINE
Well yes. It could be.
SPECIAL AGENT
You must have known Mr. Michael too.
JEANINE
I knew him. We used to meet sometimes.
He was generous.
Yes. Like the others, as usual.
Do you think he had problems?
He never used to talk about problems.
SPECIAL AGENT
Did you meet somewhere else?
JEANINE In his house, in the car…
Did you see him the night he disappeared?
JEANINE
No, a day before.
Special Agent looks at the waitress. Waitress comes to the table.
SPECIAL AGENT
Two glasses of Champagne, please.
The waitress brings two glasses of champagne.
SPECIAL AGENT (CONT’D) Anyway, maybe
you met
Mr. Michael the next day too?
Yes.
