The table shows that the world’s top exporters and importers are the largest industrial countries and China, with China leading the list of the world exporters and the United States leading the list of the world importers. China moved very rapidly in the ranks of the largest world merchandise exporters and importers in recent years and now occupies first place in exports and second place after the United States in imports. Table 1.8 also shows that the leading exporters were also, for the most part, the leading importers. Table 1.9 shows the world’s leading exporting and importing countries of commercial services in 2010. The ranking is similar to that for merchandise trade, except for China, which is now fourth in exporting and third in importing.
