Patti President ISS/SIC and Congress President WCS 2017 DEAR FRIENDS, We want to welcome you to the 47 th World Congress of Surgery of the International Society of Surgery (ISS/SIC) which will take place August 13–17 in Basel, Switzerland. Basel is a lovely city, commonly considered the cultural center of Switzerland. The city is situated at the border with Germany and France, therefore very easily reachable from any part of the world through the Zurich international Airport which is connected by train to the city. Basel has a modern and efficient convention center which has already hosted many important meetings, and Switzerland offers a strong and stable economic and political situation. In addition to the 6 Collective Member Societies (ASAP, BSI, IAES, IASMEN, IATSIC, ISDS) we envision a robust participation of European Surgical Associations and a state of the art scientific program. I would like to stress that along the goal of a successful and scientifically sound congress, the focus of the ISS/SIC will be on the new generation of surgeons who represent the work force of the future. Special membership and congress fees will be available for medical students, residents and fellows. The ISS foundation will support the participation of surgeons from low income countries through travelling grants. Similar grants are also sponsored by the participating societies. Awards will be given to the best presentations by trainees. In collaboration with the Association of Academic Surgery and the World Journal of Surgery, the ISS/SIC will sponsor a Career Advancement Course and a Writer’s Course, hoping to replicate the participation and the success of similar activities in Helsinki in 2013 and in Bangkok in 2015. See you in Basel. Regards, Marco G. Patti, President International Society of Surgery & Congress President WCS 2017 WELCOME MESSAGE BY THE ISS/SIC AND WCS 2017 PRESIDENT www.wcs2017.org 6 WELCOME MESSAGE BY THE CO-PRESIDENTS OF THE LOCAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE WCS 2017 Pierre-Alain Clavien & Nicolas Demartines WCS 2017 LOC Co-presidents DEAR FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES, Welcome to Basel, Switzerland, the city on the Rhine and home to one of the oldest medical Faculties in Europe. Basel – embedded between Switzerland, Germany and France – is very proud of its past, currently counting about 800'000 inhabitants in the entire agglomeration on the River Rhine. The University of Basel was founded in 1460 as the first Swiss University. Relevant for the ISS/SIC, was the leadership of Martin Allgöwer as secretary general for many years, who moved the ISS/SIC office from Brussels to Basel in 1979, contributing to the success and current development of the Society. The WCS 2017 Local Organizing Committee (LOC) with ISS/SIC President Patti and our congress organizer MCI offer you an attractive scientific program, prepared by ISS/SIC and the 6 Collective Member Societies with several special lectures including internationally recognized speakers. The Allgöwer lecture will be held by Swiss Astronaut Claude Nicollier, four time scientist/ astronaut on the International Space Station. He will deliver his spectacular lecture about mankind in Space. Moreover, various hands-on courses for breast surgeons (BSI) and GI-surgeons (ISS/SIC) will be available during the congress, as well as the most appreciated scientific writing course. We are very happy to welcoming you here in Switzerland and Basel, and wish you a great and fruitful congress. With our best personal wishes.
