The improved use of fertilizers was another result of the Green Movement. In the water cycle, the ions from most fertilizers run out. As a consequence, dissolved nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates are enriched in water bodies. In rivers and streams, aquatic plant growth is overstimulated due to a loss of dissolved oxygen. This eutrophication mechanism will destroy all marine life in these environments. ( Huang, 2017)
Furthermore, continuous irrigation of dry areas can lead to problems with the soil. In small-grained soils in these areas, which have high water absorption ability and low infiltration rate, soil salinization is widespread. Any methods of irrigation apply significant quantities of salt to the soil, raising the natural salt rate. This can be achieved at the foot of a hill as well. As a major mechanism for soil depletion, soil salinization is known. Although technologies do not enrich surface and groundwater supplies, restoration, and better environmental protection can streamline the use of essential freshwater. For instance, drip irrigation in agriculture can minimize water use by almost 50 percent. However, maintenance and construction costs in developed countries also hinder access to these more effective technologies. (Welle, 2017).
