2.1.Several types of grammar exercises used for a2 level learners

Over the years, many methods have been developed for teaching grammar and have been built upon, abandoned, or combined, all with the same goal in mind—teaching students how to communicate effectively and understand how to use the English language. Because of the grammatical complexity of English, each method has its pros and cons. Some lessons are less likely to be remembered, while others may require more in-depth explanation and practice.

Regardless of how grammar is taught, a well-rounded understanding of English grammar is the most important factor in improving the literacy of students.There are lots of different types of tests and exams to test your level of grammar. In this section we explain some of the most common types of exercises and we give you tips for you to be able to get top marks in your exams. You have to write the correct word(s) to complete a text.

  • Read the whole text. It’s important to understand what the text is about.

  • Read the whole sentence before and after the gap.

  • Before you look at the options do you know what type of word is missing? Is it a noun? A verb? A preposition? etc.

  • Read the whole sentence with your word. Does your word make sense in the sentence?

  • Check that your word is grammatically correct in the sentence.

  • If you don’t know an answer, guess. You may be right!

  • Check your answers carefully when you finish.

  • Missing words are often auxiliary verbs, pronouns, relative pronouns, articles, quantifiers, prepositions, phrasal verbs, modals and linking words ...
