Inverness, Scotland As well as being a wonderful holiday destination the Highlands of Scotland are home to a quarter of a million people living in communities spread throughout the area. From the vibrant city of In- verness to remote crofting communities and sparsely populated islands. Though it is the capital of the Highlands, the first impression of Inverness is that of a modern town with few signs of antiquity - because, in ancient days, as a meeting point of Highland and Low- land, it was a place of conflict. Clan Donald is said to have burned the town at least seven times, while Bonnie Prince Charlie's forces destroyed the fort here in 1745. One of the many joys of Inverness is the rich variety of places to visit and things to do both in and around the city. The city boasts a host of historic buildings, notably in the Old Town, which you can appreciate while you browse city shops from the Victorian Mar- ket to the new award-winning Eastgate centre. Take a stroll to Inverness Castle, currently used as a courthouse, and St Andrew's Cathedral, which domi- nate the River Ness and one of the most beautiful riverside settings in Britain. Enjoy the fine circular walk from the castle along the river and through the Ness Islands where you can watch anglers casting long lines to leaping Atlantic salmon. You can even buy a daily ticket and try it for yourself. Above the city lies Craig Phadrig, once the stronghold of Pictish Kings, which offers interesting forest walks and magnificent views of the Moray Firth, home to a diverse range of wildlife including bottle- nose dolphins which can even be seen from the city. Take in one of many events and festivals, explore the art, history and heritage of the Highlands at Inverness Museum & Art Gallery or relax in the tropical gardens at Inverness Floral Hall - or why not take an open-topped bus ride round the city or a Cruise down theCaledonian Canal to world fa- mous Loch Ness. Also alongside the canal is the fascinating and unusual Titanic Inverness Maritime Museum. If that’s not enough there’s plenty more to see and do around Inverness. Around Inverness To the south west, and just 15 minutes from the city centre lies Loch Ness, where it's compulsory to keep an eye out for our most famous resident – Nessie – but of course there’s much more to see and do than monster spotting., including
To the south east lie the Cairngorms – Britain’s largest Na- tional Park, famous for it’s wildlife and range of activities as well as numerous attractions for the less active.
mous for its golf is within easy reach. On route, take in Fort George, Culloden Battlefield, romantic and historic Cawdor Castle or immerse yourself in the past at the Bronze age Clava Cairns. Close to Fort George is the Highland Avia- tion Museum - a must for any enthusiast! Lying to the north across the Moray Firth is the Black Isle – not really an island but a peninsula jutting into the firth. It’s a great place for spotting the Moray Firth dolphins and just a mile north of Inverness at North Kessock the WDCS dolphin
To the west Beauly, with its historic Priory and specialist shops, isn't far away and is the gateway to Strathglass and the glens of Strathfarrar, Cannich and Affric, the latter described by many as the most beautiful glen in Scotland.
Minutes from Inverness, the National Trust for Scotland's visitor centre at Culloden vividly tells the story of the defeat of the Jacobite forces led by Bonnie Prince Charlie and the government troops (including many Scottish soldiers) under the Duke of Cumberland in 1746.
The impressive Clava Cairns date from around 3000BC and make another interesting excursion from Inverness.
