How to Use Role-Playing Games to Teach English: Practical Tips
Role play in any classroom brings a range of benefits. It adds variety to a lesson, which can be fun and motivating for students. It broadens the possibilities for language production by taking students beyond their own lives and experiences. Role play can also help with group dynamics; quieter students can take on the role of a much more forthright person and are encouraged to communicate more readily. 1. Decide what language skills you are working on. 2. Prepare your Students ------- assess the level and age of your class in order to prepare them effectively for the role play. A lower level class may need more initial input in identifying the language they’ll need for the role play. 3. Don’t Prepare Your Students ---- another way of helping students to learn language is by throwing them into a role play without any preparation 4 whatsoever. In doing so, they recognize the specific language they lack for this particular situation. 4. Choose the Format Discussion , Debate , Phone call or others . 5. Follow up activities --- to really cement the new or practiced language forms in the minds of your students, be sure to do some kind of follow up or reflective activity. Reflect on phrases used as well as facial expressions and body language as an extension of how they communicated their words. TYPES OF ROLE PLAY FOR A1 LEVEL( elementary level) Doctors and Dentists – children will enjoy wearing stethoscopes, prescribing medicines and treating other children. They can take turns playing doctors, nurses and patients and think of what ailments they will cure. Weather ----- children tell about the weather and show it by their action. Example: hat a sunny day!!! I love it ! Pilot – you could use small chairs or cushions to recreate the 5 passenger rows of an aeroplane. Children will enjoy taking it in turns to be the pilots and passengers, and recreating what they encounter on flights. Construction Engineers – encourage children to build towers out of building blocks/Lego bricks and to use toy tools to fix broken items.Construction Engineers – encourage children to build towers out of building blocks/Lego bricks and to use toy tools to fix broken items. Cooking – you can use food or kitchen equipment play-sets to encourage cooking role play, or you could try making different foods out of cardboard and paper. In the ZOO - in this situation children tell about their favourite animals and imitate to their sounds or appearance . In the park --- children say about their gamy field and show them by the help of some pictures which are maked before . 6 CONCLUSION To conclude, Role play is a great way to get students using and developing their language skills in a “real world” setting.
