LECTURE 2 LITERATURE OF THE USABASIC WORDS:Pedant- somebody who displays his or her knowledge ostentatiouslyPuritans- a member of a group of Protestants in 16th- and 17th-century England and 17th-century America who believed in strict religious discipline and called for the simplification of acts of worshipPuritan- somebody who lives by a strict moral or religious code, especially somebody who is suspicious of pleasureMillennium- a period of 1,000 years, especially a period that begins or ends in a year that is a multiple of Romantic poetry1,0001. American books were harshly reviewed in England. Americans were painfully aware of their excessive dependence on English literary models. The search for a native literature became a national obsession.
Cultural revolutions, unlike military revolutions, cannot be successfully imposed but must grow from the soil of shared experience. Revolutions are expressions of the heart of the people; they grow gradually out of new sensibilities and wealth of experience. It would take 50 years of accumulated history for America to earn its cultural independence and to produce the first great generation of American writers:
